The 3 main reasons I’m ashamed that Fiverr is Israeli


Yes, that’s right.  I’m Israeli.  I’m proud to be Israeli.  And I’m so in love with this country, and with Israeli innovation.

But there’s one Israeli company that I believe is giving us all a bad name: Fiverr.

Why?  Well, the answer isn’t really all that complicated .  I’m ashamed to share this country with the bad business practices of a company like Fiverr because in a lot of ways they act like the big bad bully of the online marketplace world.

What does it take to become a great big ruthless corporate bully?  I could probably name lots of ways, but let’s stick with the first 3 reasons that come to mind:

  1. Out of control service charges
  2. Punishing responsible sellers
  3. Creating refund / recourse policies that are bizarrely cruel and draconian

Some of this is probably stuff you already know.  But the reality, when you put it all together, is far more grim than you could imagine.  What it works out to essentially is digital sharecropping, a term others have used better and more articulately, but a metaphor which I’m going to borrow for now because it works.

How can we tell that’s what’s going on here?  Well, this is a decent working definition of sharecropping:

Sharecropping or feudalism is a form of agriculture in which a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on their portion of land.

In our Fiverr metaphor, Fiverr owns the “land,” which is the high-profile real estate of a high-ranking web address.  Benevolently, they let sellers like me use the land to grow crops, in this case, megabucks, in return for a share of the crops, i.e., some of the megabucks for themselves.

And if we’ve learned nothing else from Reconstruction in the southern United States, we know deep down in our heart of hearts that sharecroppers can never be owners.  The only person who gets rich this way is the person who was already rich to begin with – the landowner.

I want to be very clear.  This is just my opinion, based on my experiences.  I’ve had good experiences on this site, but then again, most – especially recently – have been pretty bad.  If you’ve had great experiences, I’d love to hear about them, and maybe even write about them.

I also want to add that when I first became aware of Fiverr, I was the BIGGEST fan.  Prove it, you say?

But the way I see it, things have taken a turn for the worse lately.  And it’s making me really sad to watch what had the potential to be such a great platform heading straight downhill from a freelancer-experience perspective.

So what’s my beef with Fiverr these days?  Well, to begin with…

1) Fiverr’s service charges are out of control

More than once I’ve had buyers pull out at the last minute because they didn’t realize all the service charges Fiverr piles up on top of the base $5 rate.  If they’re buying from within Israel, there’s also VAT, even though I as a small business don’t charge VAT.  And these charges generally pile up — the more the gig costs, the more they’re going to pay on top of the advertised rate.

The other day, though, I saw a post which drove home how nuts the system is.  As a seller, I only make $4 for every $5 gig (very few of my sales only cost $5, but it scales — I get 80%, they get 20%).  And if I want to buy a gig, I pay all the regular service charges.  So basically, buying a $5 gig costs me (as an Israeli) $8, exactly what I would make from selling two $5 gigs.  That’s nuts.

They claim all the charges are to ensure that you have a great experience on their site.  Frankly, I’ve had better experiences on Craigslist when it was purely text-based.  In fact, in some ways, Fiverr would work way better if it was purely text based.  There are few bells and whistles here that are absolutely necessary for doing business.  I say call a spade a spade – a service charge is just that, a charge that lets them profit from both ends of the transaction, grabbing a little bit from both seller and buyer.  And not really caring much if it discourages sales because they have other ways of making money (including, now, Fiver Courses and Fiverr Pro see below).

Basically, the only party getting rich here is Fiverr. But then, you knew that already, right?

According to this financial news site, the company is planning a $1 billion IPO sometime in 2019 and they’re courting Wall Street Investors.  And they’ve backtracked a little from a 2017 ad campaign entitled “In Doers we Trust” praising sellers essentially for giving up their lives and working like slaves or sharecroppers.  But basically, there are no surprises here.  They’re looking for a way of getting richer, selling a platform that is built on the backs of groaning, exhausted sellers all over the world.

You can bet if they find out it’s an Israeli company, they’ll also be thinking some pretty horrible things about the “startup nation” and its manipulative and self-serving business practices.  I know I am.  I know I’m thinking how awful it is that this is what some people might think of when they think about Israel.

Hey, everybody!  We have some great companies here, I promise!  Just happens that Fiverr isn’t one of them.

Here are a few awesome Israeli companies.  I promise most of us are incredible here.  Look – so many good apples.  Too bad one stinky one is ruining it for so many people…


And then… along comes one bad apple.

2) Fiverr systematically punishes responsible sellers

How do they punish sellers?

There are so many examples.  But probably the most vivid is the cancellation policy.  In order to protect their precious income stream, they punish sellers for cancellations.

Any cancellations.

Even if it’s not their fault.

For example.  Let’s say a buyer is looking at my gig page.  Her finger slips and she accidentally places an order.  Whoopsie!

Not a problem… she contacts me with a cancellation request, I quickly agree, because as a freelancer, it doesn’t make any sense for me to refuse.

And then – Fiverr has a hissy fit. What form does this hissy fit take?

It’s called Fiverr Seller Levels.  Theoretically, it’s a meritocracy:  if you’re a good seller, respond promptly to inquiries and hand in all your work on time, you’ll go up a level or two and get a special badge on your account.

Which is all lovely… Except one of the metrics by which they rank you as a good seller is “order completion.” That sounds fine, right?  Who’d want a seller who didn’t complete their orders?

Ah, but remember that stupid buyer who accidentally placed an order?  That counts.

It also counts if someone places a big order for something I don’t do.  Let’s say they want me to transcribe the text of their YouTube video and translate it into English.  I don’t do transcription.  But they don’t bother contacting me ahead of time.  They glance at my gig page, see that it says “translate” and assume that covers everything they need.  So they place an order.

Let’s say they place a big order (even though my page says – in two languages – “for goodness’ sake, whatever you do, don’t place a big order without checking in with me ahead of time!!!”).  A VERY big order.  They have a lot of transcription, they guess at the cost, and add the charge for 24 hour delivery.

Awesome.  But I can’t do any of it and they’re too stupid to realize that.

The natural thing, the SANE thing to do would be to cancel.  I can’t do what they’ve ordered.  I never said I could do what they asked, and it was their own stupid fault for ordering without even talking to me first.

But Fiverr doesn’t care about that.  Oh, sure, they’ll let me go ahead and cancel.  But then that BIG cancellation (remember, it was a BIG order!) immediately affects my order completion rate.  It doesn’t matter if you finish 100 little jobs; that 1 BIG job you didn’t do is going to bring you down, down, DOWN.

When your rating falls, you don’t come up as high in the search ratings, though of course, the criteria they use to rank search results on their site are probably top secret.  You don’t look as good to potential buyers.  You don’t get as much work.

And all because you refused to do work you… couldn’t do?

You bad seller, you.


Their system has no way of differentiating between stupid cancellations and actual situations of seller failure, meaning they’re inevitably going to end up punishing good sellers… because customers are stupid and don’t read the instructions.  And because it only takes one to destroy a reputation built up, in some cases, over years.

But alas, this is by no means the only way Fiverr punishes sellers.

In fact, as of a couple of weeks ago, they have just introduced two BRAND-NEW ways to punish responsible long-term sellers:  (1) Fiverr courses and (2) Fiverr pro.

Fiverr Courses are just what it sounds like.


If you’re a graphic artist, say, you pay them to take a course and then they give you a special badge that shows up on your seller page.  Presumably, buyers are going to know what that is and choose sellers who have the badge over sellers who don’t.  And in the meantime, Fiverr is going to rake in a ton of money from sellers to “teach” them skills they already have (because who in their right mind would start a Photoshop gig on Fiverr if they don’t know Photoshop???).

This system honestly reminds me of a sharecropping system where they’ll happily take money out of your income to sell you the tools you need to make money.  Disgusting.

Oh, and then there’s Fiverr Pro, a new way “to help highly skilled sellers standout from the crowd” (could have used a pro copy edit on that one) and help buyers looking for “highly skilled professionals.”

In other words, a site that started out being a place where little-guy sellers like me could share their skills in a highly competitive but still somewhat meritocratic environment, is slowly shifting to a model where big guys can edge them out of business.

(Why create a new tier for pro sellers?  Simple math:  if they rake in 20% of every transaction, then bigger transactions give them a heftier pie slice.  And believe me, nobody loves pie like Fiverr.)

I’m a good seller and have been for a long time.  I have a ton of positive reviews, and I do great work.  I was a Level 2 seller forever and ever until they bumped me last month due to a single cancellation that wasn’t my fault (see above).

But when I applied to become a pro, they pretty quickly bounced me back an email saying I wasn’t what they were looking for: “your application does not meet the current requirements” — not that they’ll tell you what those are.  I think it mostly comes down to external verifiability.  In other words, you already have to be big and good, and Fiverr reputation doesn’t count.  Why doesn’t it count?  It seems that in refusing to acknowledge success on their site, they’re basically acknowledging that their site is worthless.  Which seems odd to me, but then again, as I’ve said above, they’re all about the ruthless moneymaking and not much else.

And as one last piece of evidence that that is true, I offer you…


3) Fiverr’s refund / recourse policies are cruel and draconian

Ah… yes.  Refunds.  Recourse.  This is what I’m up against this week.

This is why I started writing this post in the first place.

Because I feel like I’ve been robbed.  Kinda like this, only more so.

I occasionally buy gigs on Fiverr, and last week, I placed a quick order with a seller I’d used before.  I had some money in my account but not quite enough so the rest came out of my PayPal account.  The seller then replied saying she was having some medical issues and had forgotten to shut down her gig.  No problem, right?  I hit Cancel, she agreed, and the order was cancelled.  Based on an email that the money had been refunded to my account, I assumed (mistake) that the money had been refunded to my account.

I quickly found another seller and placed another order for the exact same amount.  Easy, right?

And here’s some basic math — my account balance was now… did you guess ZERO?
Well, no.  It was -$3.00.  And my PayPal had also had the exact same amount taken out again.

What the heck, Fiverr?

A quick email to Customer Support restored my balance to zero.  But then they told me they couldn’t refund the money to my PayPal, meaning I was still out.  A small amount, sure, but why should I have to pay any amount twice to order the same work?

After a week of back and forth, where they were “sorry [I] felt that way” and that my “experience was less than positive” I was sick of their nonsense and filed a dispute with PayPal.  That’s when I got a notice — any claims through a payment provider are a violation of Fiverr’s terms of service.  And if I don’t cancel my claim, they can remove my account.


Yup, that’s right.  If their customer support staff don’t give you the answer you like, you have ABSOLUTELY NO RECOURSE TO ANY THIRD PARTY:

I checked the terms of service, and they’re absolutely right.  You basically agree when you sign up that you are letting them do whatever they want with your money.  If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.  Here’s the exact wording from their Terms of Service:

Filing a transaction dispute or reversing a payment through your payment provider or your bank is a violation to these Terms of Service. Doing so may get your account temporarily or permanently disabled.

Do you remember agreeing to this?  I sure don’t.  You basically agree when you sign up that you are letting them do whatever they want with your money.  If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.

But picture the workers a little more beaten-down.  A little more frazzled.  A little more nickel-and-dimed by every single niggling policy.  Knowing they have nowhere to turn.  Knowing they can’t make it on their own in the harsh reality of the global marketplace.  Fiverr has got them right where it wants them.

Why Google Docs is the big fat loser in the battle of Docs vs. Word


As a freelance writer, when I’m talking to a new client or potential client, I try to say “Yes!” just as often as possible. But these days, I find myself saying yes even when my brain is screaming “NO!!!!” Why?

Because for whatever reason, clients are asking me to work in Google Docs, and as far as I’m concerned, Google Docs represents the death of intelligence and productivity.

It’s not just about new technology – in general, I’m happy to adapt to whatever’s the latest and greatest, and my speed at ramping up with any new app or program can be super-fast if I want it to be. I’m not dumb, and it’s not that I haven’t tried Google Docs. It’s that I’ve tried – and it’s simply terrible.

There are definitely pluses, including virtually seamless collaboration and a ubiquitous work environment you can access from almost anywhere. And of course, the zero-dollars price tag. But as far as I’m concerned, those aren’t enough to make working in Google Docs worthwhile.

Here are the three main reasons I avoid working in Google Docs whenever possible:

  • It’s slower – this is maybe the biggest strike against Google Docs.  I don’t have the fastest internet connection to begin with (apparently, there’s nothing faster available in my area), and there’s definitely way more latency when I’m working in Google Docs, through a web-based interface, than when I’m typing in Word or any other program directly on my own computer.  You might feel like I’m just being nitpicky, especially if I add that the latency is probably only on the order of milliseconds.  But trust me, I can FEEL the delay.  In Word, I press a key and within what I’d call “instantly,” the corresponding letter appears on the screen.  In Google Docs, the delay is only slightly longer – but long enough to be tangible.  And that in itself is highly disconcerting.  When you’re typing 90+ words per minute, there’s no time to sit around and wait for your screen to catch up with your thoughts.
  • It’s less powerful – granted, most of us don’t use even a small fraction of the features available in Word on a daily basis.  But I consider myself (ahem) a bit of a power user, in that I do use a large number of them fairly regularly.  I even used to know how to do mail merge, which used to be considered the pinnacle of power userage (well, probably macros are, and yes, I used to use those more as well…).  One aspect of Word that I use on a daily basis are Track Changes and all its related functionality.  Google Docs does offer “Suggesting” mode, a parallel feature, but the functionality is limited and in my opinion, it works far less intuitively.  (Word also offers a Compare Documents feature which I use very often as well…)


  • It’s less design-savvy – I write books, and I also format them largely in Word.  I also design things like posters, banners, and whatever, and Word is a big part of that.  This is partly true because Word has access to my squirrel-like font trove, which currently numbers around 759.  Having used word processors since before WYSIWYG (which ceased to be A Thing about 20 or so years ago), working on a document in Google Docs (and most other web-based text layout and design solutions) feels like I’m taking a huge step backwards into the era of rich text, WordPad, and other such primitive tools.  For many people, Word’s design features may seem like overkill.  But I happen to really enjoy having granular control over the appearance of my final copy, something Google Docs doesn’t quite provide.

Over the last week, I’ve also encountered one more annoyance with Google Docs.  It doesn’t let you save your document, and instead, it saves automatically every couple of seconds (an idea I don’t really love much either, though it’s possibly outweighed by the advantage of having your stuff automatically backed up!).

But now, on top of that, after I’ve finished typing, even if it says that all changes have been saved in Drive), when I go to close the document, my browser warns me that some changes might not have been saved.  Even if I wait – at one point, I just left the window open for hours testing this out! – the browser (Chrome) continues to believe that there are changes that need saving, despite Google Docs’s assertion that everything has been saved.  I don’t want to close the window when this happens because of rumours from other sites that users have lost their work in this situation.


Since you’re still with me, I’ll assume you’re inclined to agree.  So here’s one last reason I’m hesitant to use Google Docs, though it might sound a little on the paranoid side: I’m a control freak, and updates are often a VERY BAD THING.

When I find a program that works, I like to hit the freeze-frame button and keep my work environment exactly the same until such time as I’m convinced there’s another solution that will work better.

In 2018, in a world of automatic updates, this makes me a dinosaur.  Windows, Word, Adobe, my virus-scanning software… almost every program on my computer is doing its utmost to update itself constantly.  Windows is the worst, since it does this without permission or notification – usually, the only way you know it’s happening is when you go to switch on your computer and it makes you wait an extra 5, 10, or even 15 minutes while it configures all those wonderful updates:


As I said, I’m a control freak, but this has come about through hard-lived experience.  I know all too well that most of those updates are obscure patches to the lousy software they sold me in the first place, and very few are designed to make me a happier computer user.  And some, maybe just a few, will actually have a catastrophic impact on me and my work flow.  Not necessarily deleting my files, but slowing down the way I work or removing features I happen to enjoy.

So I stop these automatic updates whenever possible.  But the thing about Google Docs is that, because the program is web-based, it’s automatically updated any time the folks at Google want it to be.  Shut down your document and come back to it tomorrow morning and it’s possible that Google Docs will have an entirely new layout or feature set from the day before.

Again, most of those updates are minor and unnoticeable.  A few will interfere with the way I work.  And in no case, when I’m working with an online program like Google Docs, do I have any control over whether or not to accept the update the way I do if it’s on my own turf, inside my own computer.

Does this mean I can’t or won’t collaborate?  Of course not!
There are other ways to collaborate, though I’ll admit that many– such as a shared folder in Dropbox– aren’t quite as easy or as real-time as Google Docs.

If ALL you’re looking for is the ability to work on the EXACT SAME document at the EXACT SAME time, I have to concede that Google Docs may well be the winner.  But if you’re looking for solutions that create a great teamwork environment where every team member can put their best foot forward, I honestly believe Microsoft Word is the big fat winner.

I’m not a Luddite, but I have come to trust computers and software developers quite a lot less in the 40-plus years I’ve been working with, in, on, and around computers.  And like I said, mostly that’s with good reason.  Using Google Docs just feels too much like handing over the keys to the kingdom – the very tiny writing kingdom that is my small freelance business.

מתי בפעם האחרונה קראתם ספר ילדים באנגלית?

רוצים לפרוץ לשוק ספרי הילדים בארה”ב כסופרי ילדים או כמאיירים?  אתם ממש לא לבד!
לאחרונה קראתי המון ספרים של ישראלים שמבקשים שאתרגם את הסיפורים שלהם לאנגלית כדי שהם יוכלו לשלוח לסוכנים ועורכים ממו”לים בארה”ב. בעידן החדש, עם האינטרנט, שהופך את המרחקים לבלתי מורגשים, יש התרגשות רבה מהאפשרות לפרוץ את “קופסת” הארץ ולהצליח בחו”ל, בדיוק כמו שפרפרים יוצאים מהפקעות. 
זאת באמת הזדמנות נהדרת. אני אישית מכירה כמה אנשים שהצליחו לעשות בדיוק את זה, כשלפני 20-30 שנים לא היתה להם הזדמנות כזו… ואני שמחה. העולם צריך לשמוע יותר מישראל, ולא רק כותרות צועקות מהעיתונות.
ברור שכל סופר וסופר — ומאייר ומאייר — בארץ רוצה חלק מהפאי הגדול שקוראים לו “שוק ספרי ילדים באנגלית”.  אבל בלי להכיר ולהבין היטב את השוק של ספרי הילדים בארה”ב, כמעט לא יהיה לכם סיכוי של הצלחה.
ממה שאני רואה, הם כותבים, מאיירים, חולמים… אך לא קוראים. 
למה?  לא עשיתי סקר (יותר מדי עבודה!) אבל אפשר לחשוב על כמה סיבות:
·         הם גדלו עם ספרים – יש להם את האהובים עליהם וזהו
·         הם משתוקקים ליצור ספרים קלאסיים מודרניים הדומים לספרים של פעם
·         הם כבר מכירים ספרות ילדים פה בארץ – הם אפילו אולי סופרים ומאיירים מצליחים פה
·         הם יודעים “מה ילדים רוצים” –עובדים/עבדו עם ילדים, או שיש להם כמה נכדים, נינים, וכו’ שאוהבים את סיפורם
·         יש להם מסר שהם רוצים להעביר דרך ספר הילדים ולא משנה להם שום דבר חוץ ממנו
כל הסיבות הללו לא משנות בכלל. בכלל.  הן פשוט תירוצים ובלי לקרוא את הז’אנר שלכם פשוט לא תוכלו להצליח. נקודה.
זה לא מספיק לדעת מה מצליח פה בארץ, אלא שתכירו מה מוכרים עכשיו (כן, עכשיו, ולא לפני 20 או 40 שנה!) ברחבי מדינות דוברות אנגלית. 
קראתם “הארי פוטר”?  כל הכבוד, אבל זה היה לפני 20 שנים.  “משחקי הרעב”?  הוא מהעשור הראשון של המאה הזאת.  הרץ במבוך? אותו דבר.  לילה טוב ירח?  חחח… אחד מהאהובים עליי, אבל הגיע הזמן להגיד לו “לילה טוב” ולקרוא ספרים עכשוויים יותר. 
(הנה רשימה קצרה של ספרי הפיקצ’ר בוק הכי חשובים של העשור האחרון).
למה זה כל כך חשוב?  כי הספרים האלו ישמשו גם כתחרותכם וגם כהשראתכם.
אז בואו נחזור לשאלה בכותרת:  מתי בפעם האחרונה קראתם ספרי ילדים באנגלית? ספרי פרקים או ספרי פיקצ’ר בוק, או אפילו ספרים שתורגמו לעברית (פחות טוב כי כדאי להכיר את הספרים המקוריים אם אפשר—ועדיף לקרוא אותם בקול באנגלית)?  הכוונה לספרים חדשים, בערך מהעשור הנוכחי.
אילו ספרים קראתם ובמיוחד אילו אהבתם? מאילו צחקתם?  התבלבלתם?  התרגשתם?  התעצבנתם?  הכל אפשרי, העיקר לקרוא, להרגיש, ולהבין.
יש לי חברה שכל פעם שהיא נוסעת לארה”ב, היא קונה ספרי ילדים כדי שהיא תוכל לקרוא אותם, להראות אותם לאחרים פה בארץ, וגם ללמוד מהם ולהבין יותר טוב מה נדרש בשוק.
אם אתם לא נוסעים הרבה או לא מעוניינים בלקנות ספרים, יש דרך קלה אחרת!  אפשר גם למצוא המון ספרים ביוטיוב שאנשים (בדר”כ לא הסופרים עצמם) קוראים לילדים.  ככה שסופרים פה יכולים להכיר יותר טוב את השוק וספרות הילדים העדכנית בארה”ב.
(קראתם במקרה את הסיפור “דרקונים אוהבים טאקואים”?  ספר מוזר ומאוד מצליח!  תקשיבו ביוטיוב בלינק הזה… ביוטיוב אתם יכולים אפילו לתרגם את הכתוביות לעברית כדי שתבינו כמעט כל מילה!)
זאת המשימה שלכם עכשיו. כי בסיפורים של דוברי עברית שאני קוראת יש המון בעיות שאני מרגישה שהיו יכולות להימנע אילו הם רק השתמשו במשאבים הבסיסיים (והחינמיים!) שכבר יש להם.  זאת לא משימה קשה, אלא אפילו מהנה… לא?  לשבת, לנוח, לקרוא ולשמוע סיפורי ילדים, כמו פעם. J
שימו לב למה אתם קוראים ורואים:
·         סגנון הטקסט (ספרים כיום הרבה פחות פורמליים מפעם)
·         חרוזים, אם יש (מדויקים יותר או פחות)
·         דמויות, שמות והאופי שלהן
·         עלילות הסיפורים
·         גילאי קהל היעד
·         מספר מילים (כמה לכל עמוד? סה”כ?), מספר עמודים, עימוד ועיצוב הספר וכל תכונותיו הפיזיות
·         איורים (לאיורים יש סגנון מאוד שונה מפה)
אפשר גם לקרוא חוות דעת באמאזון וככה להבין יותר טוב מה הקוראים רוצים, וגם מה שהם ממש לא רוצים.  לצערי, השוק בארה”ב הוא אגם גדול ואכזרי. אני יודעת את זה היטב מניסיון, כי עוד לא הצלחתי למצוא סוכן. אולי יום יבוא… ובינתיים אהיה בבית, מכורבלת על הספה, קוראת ספרי ילדים.  להתראות במדפים!

Are you struggling to get ahead as a freelancer?  Barely keeping your head above water?  Kicking and splashing, but nobody’s coming to your rescue?

You’re not alone.  Both in freelancing… and in struggling.

More people are working freelance today than ever before. It’s no mystery why: anyone can connect online and get jobs easily without leaving your chair.  But the bad news is that the competition is getting stiffer, too.  Some estimates say that 40% of America’s workforce will be working freelance by the year 2020 – and that’s just 4 years away!

While there are no separate stats for freelancers, some 50% of small business in the U.S. fail – and that includes us freelance types.  Are you one of them?

Will you drown?  Or rise to the top of the heap and create your own small, medium or large successful writing or other freelance business?

Do any of these lines sound familiar?

  • “He only paid half what I thought he would!”
  • “They cancelled halfway through!”
  • “She added a ton of information after I’d done most of the work!”
  • “It took way longer than I thought it would… I don’t want to think about how much I made per hour on that job.”

I’ve said them all, too.

Although I’m a writer, I believe the following tips apply no matter what you’re doing. If you’re in business for yourself, you owe it to yourself to be as business-like as possible. That way, there are no surprises.

  1. Price yourself honestly and fairly. Be utterly transparent about your pricing. No surprises! But take your time to set pricing that’s fair and that you can stand over the long term (don’t make this guy’s mistake!). Don’t be afraid to edge your prices up with time and experience. Existing clients can keep paying the same (for a while, but you can increase those within reason as well over time), but new clients can be charged new rates.
  2. Find out exactly what they want. If I’m writing, that usually means usually word count, but it could also include things like audience, call to action, and references, if it’s an academic paper. If I’m editing, some people want a light edit, others want a deep-scrub kind of edit that sometimes involves me writing or rewriting sections of their text.
  3. Find out when they want it. A boss taught me this very early in my working life. He said, “Whenever someone hands you a project, your first question should be, ‘When do you want this by?’” If you can’t do it by then, be honest. Don’t be afraid to go back and forth on this.  A client might say they need something “right away,” but different people have different definitions of “right away.”  Today?  This morning?  Next week?  Make sure you find out!
  4. Never take on a deadline you can’t meet. Don’t be afraid to say no. Or if it’s going to cost more to have a job done extra-fast, be clear about that up-front. “There’s a $20 charge for rush jobs” is never a problem. This puts the ball back in their court, let them know that what they’re asking goes above and beyond. They’ll have to re-evaluate and decide if it’s worth it. But if you absolutely can’t do what they’re asking by when they need it, just let them know.  Tough luck this time around, but at least they’ll know you’re honest.
  5. Keep track of everything! Don’t trust your memory. It may work fine if you only have one or two jobs on the go. But you’re hoping to build that, right? Once you have more clients, more work coming in, more assignments tugging you one way or another, you’ll need a way to keep track and prioritize. This could be high-tech, with an app, or low-tech – a piece of paper with a list of your tasks for the day – or some combination of the two.  Add new jobs to the calendar right away, broken down into relevant milestones, if possible.

At the core of all of these tips is one simple truth: If you don’t know what the client expects, you will NEVER meet that client’s expectations. (Unless maybe you’re setting up shop as a freelance psychic???)

Not all surprises can be prevented; that’s why it’s called living and learning. There are always going to be jerks in the world trying to take advantage of freelancers.  But if you don’t follow these steps, you’re setting yourself up for disappointments on both sides.
